So come learn about solar eclipses from Dr. Teets, the Director of the Dyer Observatory at Vanderbilt. Dr. Teets will be conducting a solar viewing at 3:30 p.m. with a a sun telescope *weather permitting*. The program begins at 4 p.m. and is suitable for older children - adults. Reading for Change Book Club October Meeting

This month we will be discussing The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. This book club meets exclusively via Zoom. We are always excited to have new members!

Bethesda and Surrounding Communities - Book Launch

Bethesda and Surroundings Communities by Rick Warwick presents a history told with personal interviews by those who grew up in the southern part of Williamson County. Period photographs are included to enrich the narratives of those telling their life stories. Histories of schools, churches, country stores, physicians, fraternal organizations, and local postmasters supplement the interviews in more detail. The early families settled largely on the North Carolina land grant of 4,800 acres belonging to Dr. Joseph Blythe, a Revolutionary War veteran. A section entitled Faces of the Past offers an insight into the physical appearances of those who once called this area home. Photos, screenshots, and videos may be taken at library events and activities for library use and publicity. Anyone not wanting to have their photo taken should notify library staff at the time of the event or activity.

Alzheimer's Caregivers Support Group

Caring for a person with dementia requires different techniques than those needed to care for someone who is not cognitively impaired. Alzheimer’s Association support groups encourage attendees to share information, give and receive mutual support and exchange coping skills. Attendees can offer practical suggestions based on their own experiences that may make caregiving easier. Sharing those ideas in a support group can prevent caregivers from “reinventing the wheel.”

Our Caregivers Support Group is free and facilitated by a trained Alzheimer’s Association volunteer. We meet at 10 a.m. the 2nd Friday every month in the Learning Center on the 2nd floor. Registration not required.

Fancy Women of Smokey Row: Prostitution in the Civil War Lecture presented by Brandon Hulette, Military Historian and Vanderbilt Professor This talk delves into the history of the Army’s struggle to address the issue of prostitution, including law enforcement efforts, attempts to export prostitutes, and finally becoming the first city to legalize prostitution in this period. With legalization came improved health and the emergence of legal brothels that catered to all soldiers' needs as well as prominent figures building empires from the once illicit trade such as the infamous Mollie May. We’ll discuss how all of this came to be, the stories of the people involved, and the locations in Nashville where legal prostitution took place.

True Crime Book Club: The Last Ride

The Last Ride: Murder, Money, and the Sensational Trial that Captivated Nashville by Martha S. Tate is the first book written about the murder of prominent Nashville citizen W. Haynie Gourley on May 24, 1968, and the controversial trial during the summer of 1969. The book traces the circumstances leading up to the killing of the popular, self-made millionaire auto dealer, the extensive manhunt, police investigation, and the improbable grand jury indictment of a popular former college football star. For the first time, the author pieces together the events and evidence that bring into question the outcome of this notorious case.

Covered obsessively by local broadcast TV stations and the two daily newspapers, The Nashville Banner and The Tennessean, this was Nashville’s most publicized trial with both daily papers printing the entire transcript of the trial. The story still fascinates as one is left to wonder whether or not justice was served in the end.

Boys and Girls Club Of Middle TN Code Academy STEM Exploration Day

Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee's Code Academy presents STEM Exploration Day Tuesday, October 10th from 1:30pm-4:30pm. This program is geared for 3rd grade through 12th grade. This is a drop-in style event: participants can arrive and leave at any time, but they are more than welcome to stay for the entire duration of the event. Stations will be set up around the room featuring STEM-based activities. These activities include programmable Spheros robots, Lego bridge challenge, paper bridge construction, cardboard creation station, parachute drop, popsicle-stick building area, Snap Circuit electrical engineering activity, and the coding and "make your own emoji" table!
